Edirne Saray Hamamı
About
Edirne Saray Hamamı is in the Meydan neighbourhood of Edirne's central district, directly behind the Selimiye Mosque. The hammam was built in the second half of the 14th century on the grounds of the Old Palace (Saray-ı Atik), which Murad I had built in 1365-1368; according to the business, it was added to the palace in the reign of Bayezid I (Yıldırım Bayezid). It is one of the few buildings of the Old Palace to have survived to the present day.
Originally serving only the palace, the hammam became a public bath when it was attached to the Sultan Selim Foundation with the construction of the Selimiye Mosque. The building stood closed for many years after the Balkan Wars; its domes, kurnas (marble basins) and navel stone (the heated marble platform) were faithfully restored by the Directorate General of Foundations (Vakıflar). In this square-plan double hammam, the west wing is reserved for men and the east wing for women.
The basic service is kese (exfoliating scrub) and foam wash; packages are created by adding a foam, clay, salt, honey, coffee, oil or foot massage. Skin care is also offered for women.
According to its Google listing, the hammam is open every day from 07.00 to 23.45. Booking requests can be made by phone, on the WhatsApp line or through the form on the website. The business does not recommend hammam treatments for people with conditions such as asthma or diabetes, for women in the first or last months of pregnancy, or for children under 6. Within walking distance for those exploring the Selimiye Mosque and the historic buildings around it, it is a good address for anyone looking for a traditional hammam experience in a historic building.
