Istanbul layover: can you fit in a Turkish bath in 8–12 hours?
Yes, with 8 hours or more and a passport that lets you out. Real IST travel times, when to be back, luggage, Touristanbul and two hammam timelines near Sultanahmet.
Massage, hammam or spa: where to start
Spa Deneyimi is an independent guide that lets you compare spas, hammams and massage centres across Turkey by treatment, location, price level and reviews. Choose the treatment you are looking for: its page explains what it is, who it suits and which venues offer it.
Massage
Swedish and aromatherapy massage use light to medium pressure for relaxation, deep tissue and sports massage work on persistent muscle tension, and Thai massage is given clothed and without oil. Compare massage types by pressure, length and who they suit.
Hammam
In a Turkish bath you warm up on the navel stone, the heated marble platform, before the kese scrub and the foam massage; the full ritual usually takes 60-90 minutes. Historic hammams stand out for their architecture, while hotel hammams come with a sauna and pool.
Spa
Hotel spas bring together a hammam, sauna, steam room and pool with a menu of massages and treatments; many accept non-residents with a day pass or a massage booking. Thermal resorts have pools fed by hot-spring water.
Skin and body care
Facials, body scrubs, body masks and cellulite treatments are mostly given at hotel spas, in the same visit as a massage or a hammam ritual. Their effects are temporary and are kept up by repeating them regularly.
Frequently asked questions
What is Spa Deneyimi?
Spa Deneyimi is an independent guide that lists and compares spas, hammams, massage centres and thermal resorts across Turkey in one place. You can filter venues by treatment, city, price level, opening hours and arrangements for women and men, and see photos, reviews and price lists on each venue's page.
What is the difference between a spa, a hammam and a massage centre?
A hammam is a traditional bathing ritual: you warm up on hot marble, then have a kese scrub and a foam wash. A massage centre focuses on massages and some treatments. A spa offers both, usually with a sauna, steam room, pool and relaxation area as well.
What do massage and spa prices depend on?
Price depends mostly on the length of the session, the type of venue and what the package includes; hotel spas may include use of the wet area, and prices can rise at weekends and in high season. You can compare the prices published on venue pages and confirm the current amount with the venue before booking.
Can I use a hotel spa without staying at the hotel?
Many hotel spas accept non-residents with a day pass, a massage booking or a membership, but this varies from venue to venue. You can list the venues that offer day use and ask about the conditions before booking.
How do I find women-only hamams and spas?
On the listing and search pages, choose “Women welcome” under the “Who can go” filter. Besides venues that serve women only, mixed venues that set aside separate hours or a separate section for women are listed too. Each venue's page states its arrangement and, where there are any, the hours reserved for women.
How are the reviews on the site checked?
Only members can write reviews, and every review passes an automatic check before it is published; an editor looks at the suspicious ones. Venues cannot delete reviews, only reply publicly. Rankings cannot be bought: they are based on rating, reviews, profile completeness and how up to date a listing is.
