About

Tarihi Lazlar Hamamı is on Bozkurt Sokak in the Hisariçi neighbourhood of central Balıkesir, in the Karesi district. Included in the Karesi District Governorship's list of registered monumental hammams, the building is, together with the Paşa, Çarşı and Yeşilli hammams, one of the historic buildings in central Balıkesir still used as hammams today.
The building, of the classic Turkish bath type, is thought to have been built in the 18th century; who commissioned it and the exact year of construction are unknown. The hammam was registered as an immovable cultural asset by a decision of the High Council for Immovable Antiquities and Monuments dated 14 March 1986. Privately owned, the building has kept its essential character despite various repairs over time.
The hammam was originally built to serve both women and men. According to sources, there is now a sign at the entrance stating that it is for men, and only male guests are admitted. It therefore appeals especially to male visitors looking for a traditional neighbourhood hammam experience in the city centre, and it is an easy stop for those exploring the historic centre.
As opening hours and prices are not regularly published by any official source, you need to ask at the hammam or by phone before you go.
