What is Hammam?
A hammam is a venue where the Turkish bath tradition is practised: sweating in a hot, humid space, washing, kese (exfoliating scrub) and foam massage. What sets a hammam apart from a sauna or steam room is that the heat radiates from the marble floor and walls, the heated navel stone (the marble platform) in the centre, the water running from the marble basins, and the kese and foam massage given by a female or male bath attendant. What you find in a hammam
A traditional hammam has three sections: the changing and resting area (camekân) where you undress, the warm room where the body gets used to the heat, and the hot room with the navel stone, the basins and small private cubicles (halvet). The core of the visit is the kese, done after sweating in the hot room, followed by the foam massage. Most of the hammams listed offer kese and foam massage, and more than half also have a sauna. At hammams within hotels and spas, massage rooms are added; medical, Balinese, Swedish and aromatherapy massage are among the services often offered there. Some hammams put together packages for a bridal hammam; the historic hammams in Bursa and Eskişehir, with their pools fed by thermal water, also connect with hot-spring culture.
Types of hammam: historic, hotel and modern
Hammams fall into three sub-types according to their buildings and the way they are run:

In the listings, historic hammams are found in the Fatih and Beyoğlu districts of Istanbul, in Bursa, in the Seyhan district of Adana, in Odunpazarı in Eskişehir and in Amasya; some of these buildings have been used as hammams for centuries. Hotel hammams, meanwhile, are concentrated in Istanbul's hotel spas and in the holiday hotels on the Antalya coast.
Who a hammam suits and when to choose one
People choose a hammam when they want a thorough cleanse and relaxation, when they have a regular kese habit, when they are Turkish or foreign visitors wanting to experience the Turkish bath tradition for the first time, and for group celebrations such as a bridal hammam. In tourist areas, such as the Side and Kemer areas of Antalya, hammams are used as a break of a few hours added to a sightseeing programme.
Arrangements for women and men, and what to wear in a hammam
Arrangements vary from hammam to hammam. Some historic hammams operate with separate sections for women and men (a double hammam) or with separate hours, and some serve women only; the listings include two historic hammams open only to women. Hammams in tourist areas and hotel spas, on the other hand, are mostly mixed or offer private use for couples and families. In separate sections a peshtemal is worn; in mixed areas you are expected to wear swimwear, or swimwear under the peshtemal. What to look for when choosing a hammam
When choosing a hammam, look at how the service is delivered rather than at the architecture:
- Whether kese and foam wash are included in the entry fee or sold as a separate service
- The cleanliness of the water running in the basins and of the navel stone; whether the kese mitt is new and the peshtemal and towel are freshly washed
- Whether there is a private cubicle (halvet) or a hammam suite for private use
- Whether the hammam offers packages combining it with massage, the sauna or the pool
Practical information and health warnings for the hammam
A hammam visit including kese and foam wash usually takes one to two hours, with time to rest included. It is advisable not to go to the hammam on an empty stomach or straight after a heavy meal. A peshtemal, towel and slippers or wooden bath clogs are provided at most hammams; at some places the kese mitt and soap are sold separately, and you can also bring your own kese mitt. If you have cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled high or low blood pressure, are pregnant, or have a feverish illness, an open wound, an active skin condition such as eczema or recent surgery, consult your doctor before going into the hammam. It is important not to stay in the hot room for long, to move to the warm room if you feel dizzy and to drink water after the hammam. Cities with many hammams
Most of the hammams on the site are in Istanbul: historic hammams in Fatih and Beyoğlu, and hotel and spa hammams in Beşiktaş, Üsküdar, Sarıyer and Arnavutköy stand out. In Bursa, the hammams in Osmangazi keep alive a tradition that goes hand in hand with thermal water; Side and Kemer in Antalya, Seyhan in Adana, and Çankaya and Mamak in Ankara are the other hotspots for this type.
