Ağa Hamamı
About
Ağa Hamamı is on Turnacıbaşı Caddesi in Beyoğlu's Kuloğlu neighbourhood, a few minutes' walk from the Galatasaray end of İstiklal Avenue. According to the hammam, the building was constructed in 1454, during the reign of Mehmed the Conqueror, as a hunting lodge; it was extensively restored in 1844 under Sultan Abdülmecid and opened to the public after the proclamation of the Republic. The last renovation took place in 1986.
Services are built around three packages: the traditional package of entry, kese (exfoliating scrub) and foam wash; the massage package, which adds a 20-minute oil massage; and an option that also adds a seaweed face mask to the massage. The kese mitt, peshtemal, towel and slippers are included in the package, and Turkish tea, sherbet and Turkish delight are served on the way out. The hammam runs on the traditional system, heated from beneath the floor by wood burned in the furnace (kulhan).
The hot room has a navel stone (the heated marble platform) as well as two hot private alcoves (halvet) with kurna (marble basins), and at the entrance there is a milder cool alcove for cooling down. The hammam welcomes both women and men; kese and foam wash are given by female therapists for women and male therapists for men. Babies and children are also welcome, with a reduced rate for ages 4–12.
Ağa Hamamı is open every day of the week, 10:00–22:00; the hammam asks guests to arrive by 20:00 at the latest. The busiest hours are 17:00–20:00. Bookings are made through the form on the website or by phone, and requests are confirmed shortly afterwards by WhatsApp and email.
