Zeyrek Çinili Hamam
About
Zeyrek Çinili Hamam is on İtfaiye Caddesi in the historic Zeyrek quarter of Fatih, part of the UNESCO World Heritage area. Commissioned from Mimar Sinan by Grand Admiral Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha (Barbarossa) between 1530 and 1540, the double hammam takes its name, Çinili (tiled), from the İznik tiles made specially for its interiors. It reopened in 2023 after a 13-year restoration that began in 2010.
Besides the working hammam, the building houses a museum displaying tile fragments found during excavations and objects from hammam culture, a Byzantine cistern that hosts contemporary art exhibitions, and a library. The hammam rituals begin with resting in the hot room, kese (exfoliating scrub) and foam massage; options lasting between 50 and 125 minutes add steps such as a clay mask and hand and foot massage. Homemade sherbet is served at the start, and tea and snacks in the cooling room at the end.
Women and men use separate sections of the hammam, and each section welcomes a maximum of 10 guests at a time. Peshtemal, slippers, towel, shampoo and disposable underwear are provided, and there are lockers. There is no sauna or pool. Children can enter with a parent of the same sex, and there is a separate ritual for ages 6–11. Celebrations such as bride's and groom's hammam parties are also organised.
The hammam is open Tuesday to Sunday 08:00–22:00 and closed on Mondays. Walk-ins are accepted subject to availability, but booking at least a day in advance is recommended. It can be reached from the Vezneciler and Haliç stations of the M2 metro line; the historic building is not wheelchair accessible.
