All three venues offering foam massage in Fatih are historic hammams on the Historic Peninsula: Süleymaniye, Çemberlitaş and Cağaloğlu. At all three, the foam wash is offered as part of the classic ritual together with the kese (exfoliating scrub) and the Turkish bath; they differ in their arrangements for women and men and in the length of the visit.
Süleymaniye Hamamı, designed by Mimar Sinan as part of the Süleymaniye Külliyesi (mosque complex), offers a ritual of about 105 minutes; kese, foam wash and refreshments are included in the price, and use is mixed. Çemberlitaş Hamamı, attributed to Mimar Sinan, is a double hammam with separate women's and men's sections, and there is no time limit on entry, so after the foam wash there is time to rest without hurrying in the hot room or the cooling room. Cağaloğlu Hamamı is a double hammam built in the reign of Mahmud I; it is within walking distance of Hagia Sophia, and the entrance to the women's section is on Hamam Sokağı. None of the three hammams has extra facilities such as massage, a sauna or a pool recorded on its menu; the visit is built around the ritual itself, which ends with the foam wash.
The mixed Süleymaniye suits those who want to stay in the same area as a couple or a mixed group, and the two double hammams suit those who prefer women and men to bathe in separate sections. In the double hammams the foam wash is usually done by an attendant of the same sex in your own section; in a mixed setting, ask how this works when booking. As the area is a tourist hotspot, crowds can vary through the day; the quiet hours, whether the foam wash is included in the package or added as an extra, and the total length of the ritual are three things to find out before you go. The architecture of the buildings is described in detail in the Istanbul historic hammams guide.
How the foam wash is done is on the foam massage page, and the district's other options on the Fatih page.
Compare the 9 venues on this page by services and price level. Where a venue lists its arrangement, check whether it is women only, men only, mixed or has separate hours. For venues with opening hours, the cards show whether they are open right now. Confirm what's included, how long it takes and the current price with the venue before you book.
