Tarihi Şengül Hamamı
About
Tarihi Şengül Hamamı stands on Acıçeşme Sokak in the Hacı Bayram neighbourhood of Ulus, in Ankara's Altındağ district, on the south-western slopes below Ankara Castle. The building has no inscription; according to the business and local sources, it was built in the second half of the 15th century for İshak Pasha, Beylerbeyi (governor-general) of Anatolia. After a fire in Ulus in the 1800s the hammam remained in service following minor repairs, and today, restored under a project by the General Directorate of Foundations, it is run under the supervision of the Ankara Regional Directorate of Foundations.
The hammam has two sections, for women and for men, each with its own entrance. In both, the hot room is covered by a large dome surrounded by domed iwans, with halvet rooms (private alcoves) in the corners; the women's section has a larger warm room. The old brick domes and chimneys can still be made out above the renovated stone walls.
Services consist of kese (exfoliating scrub), foam massage and aromatic oil massage. A dry sauna, a steam room, private washing alcoves, shower areas and single and double changing rooms are available. Waxing, manicure, pedicure and salt and coffee massages are offered in the women's section only. Towels, peshtemals and slippers are provided free of charge.
The hammam opens at 07.00 seven days a week; the men's section is open until 22.00 and the women's section until 20.00. Free parking and valet service are available. A good choice for those looking for a traditional hammam experience in a historic building and for those who prefer separate sections for women and men.
