Ereğli Tarihi Şifa Hamamı
About
Ereğli Tarihi Şifa Hamamı is on Yeni Çarşı Sokak, just south of the Ulu Cami (Great Mosque) in the centre of Ereğli, a district of Konya. Set among the bazaar's shops, the hammam is near the Rüstem Paşa Kervansarayı (Rüstem Paşa Caravanserai), built by Mimar Sinan in the 16th century. Locally it is also known as Eski Hamam (the Old Hammam).
According to the Ereğli District Governorship's description, the construction date is not certain because the building has no inscription; the hammam is said to have been built in the Seljuk period and also used under the Karamanids. The general view is that it was commissioned by Karamanoğlu İbrahim Bey, and it appears that the hammam was among the revenue-producing endowments of the Ulu Cami. Because the ground level has risen over time, steps lead down into the hammam. The building consists of a changing room, warm room and hot room; the navel stone (the heated marble platform) beneath the large dome, ten kurnas (marble basins) and the private cells (halvets) stand out.
Reopened after a restoration carried out by the Vakıflar Genel Müdürlüğü (General Directorate of Foundations), the hammam appeals to Ereğli residents seeking a traditional bathing experience in a centuries-old building and to those exploring the district's historic centre.
The hammam is open every day of the week from 07:00 to 23:00. As it is not a double hammam, it is best to phone before you go to ask on which days and at what times women and men are admitted, and about services such as kese and massage.
