Mahkeme Hamamı
About
Mahkeme Hamamı stands just north of the Şerafettin Mosque in the Şemsitebrizi neighbourhood of Konya's Karatay district; the Şems-i Tebrizi Mosque is a few steps away and the Mevlana Museum about ten minutes' walk. Also recorded in sources as Hamam-ı Cedid or Yeni Hamam (New Hammam), the building owes its present name, according to local tradition, to its closeness to the old courthouse.
The hammam has no inscription; according to endowment deeds and sharia court records, it is associated with the buildings endowed to provide income for the Konya İmareti (public soup kitchen) in the reign of Karamanoğlu İbrahim Bey II (1423-1464), and it is dated to the second half of the 15th century. Repaired many times over the centuries, the building took on its present appearance in a major restoration in 1991, when its inner and outer walls were renewed.
The building follows a double-hammam plan: the western part is reserved for men and the eastern part for women, and the two sections have separate entrances. The men's section has a changing room with a marble fountain, a sixteen-sided cooling room and a hot room with four iwans and corner halvets (private alcoves); the changing room of the women's section has an eighteen-sided marble fountain. In addition to the entrance fee, kese (exfoliating scrub) and massage services are available.
According to a 2025 news report, the women's section is open from 09.00 to 18.00 and the men's section from 07.30 to 23.00; the Google listing, however, shows the hammam open every day from 07.00 to 23.00. A good stop for Turkish and foreign visitors who want to bathe in a historic hammam in central Konya. As hours can change, you are advised to phone for information before going.
