About
Tarihi İskenderpaşa Hamamı is on Paşahamam Caddesi in the Çarşı neighbourhood, home to the city's historic bazaar, in Trabzon's Ortahisar district. Standing south of the Çarşı Camii (Bazaar Mosque) and just east of the Taşhan, the building is popularly known as Paşa Hamamı; in 16th-century sources it appears as Bazar Hamamı.
According to the Doğu Karadeniz Kültür Envanteri (Eastern Black Sea Cultural Inventory), the hammam, together with the Taşhan to its west, belonged to the endowment of İskender Paşa, governor of Trabzon, and is mentioned in the endowment deed dated 1531; it is thought to have been built while İskender Paşa was governor, between 1519 and 1533. Built of cut stone and rubble as a double hammam, the building has its western part reserved for men and its eastern part for women. The men's section is entered from the north; the changing room with its octagonal lantern is followed by the barrel-vaulted cooling room and the hot room.
Having undergone major repairs in 1889, 1938 and 1981, the hammam still serves its original purpose today. Part of the bazaar's Ottoman-era fabric together with the Taşhan, which belonged to the same endowment, it is an easily reached address for those who want to bathe in a centuries-old building in central Trabzon and for visitors exploring the bazaar area.
As opening hours and the current arrangement of the women's section are not regularly announced, you need to phone the hammam before you go.
