About
Paşa Hamamı stands in the Çarşı neighbourhood in the middle of the historic bazaar in Trabzon's Ortahisar district, south of Çarşı Mosque. Also referred to in sources as İskender Paşa Hamamı or Bazar Hamamı, the building is mentioned in the 1531 endowment deed of İskender Pasha, governor of Trabzon, and belongs, together with Taşhan to its west, to the İskender Paşa Foundation.
The hammam, whose inscription has not survived, underwent major repairs in 1889, 1938 and 1981 and was restored by the General Directorate of Foundations in the late 2000s. In use as a hammam ever since it was built, the structure is a load-bearing masonry building of cut stone and rubble stone and a double hammam running east–west: the western part is reserved for men, the eastern part for women.
The men's section is entered from the north, from Paşa Hamam Sokağı; an octagonal lantern rises above the square changing room, while the hot room is lit by two small light domes in its vault. The women's section has a separate entrance to the south; its hot room consists of two connected, domed square cells.
A convenient stop for those who want to see a 16th-century building from the inside while exploring Trabzon's bazaar, and for those looking for a traditional neighbourhood hammam in the city centre. On its Google listing the hammam appears to be open around the clock; phone before you go for information on the women's section's schedule and the night hours.
