Muratpaşa Hamamı
About
Muratpaşa Hamamı is a historic hammam on Muratpaşa Caddesi in the Atalar neighbourhood of the Yakutiye district of Erzurum. Together with the Murat Paşa Mosque and the Ahmediye Madrasa, the building forms a külliye (complex) and stands at the back of this group.
Dated to 1570-1572 in the Aptullah Kuran Archive at Boğaziçi University, the hammam is counted among the charitable foundations of Kuyucu Murad Pasha, who also served in Erzurum and later rose to the post of grand vizier. Built of rubble and cut stone, the hammam was repaired in 1996; an academic study published in 2022 lists it among the Ottoman hammams in Erzurum that still operate as hammams today.
The building follows a single-hammam plan, with an ornamental pool in the middle of the square, domed changing room. From here you pass into the rectangular warm room, covered by three domes, and then into the hot room, which has an octagonal navel stone (the heated marble platform) at its centre. The hot room, covered by a large dome with muqarnas, has four iwans and, between them, four domed halvet (private bathing cubicles).
According to its Google listing, the hammam is open every day from 06.00 to 24.00. As no days or hours set aside for women have been published, women visitors would do well to phone for information before going. It is a city-centre address for those exploring the historic buildings of Yakutiye and for anyone seeking a traditional hammam experience in a 16th-century building.
