About
Paşa Hamamı is a historic Ottoman hammam on Paşakapı Caddesi in Niğde's Merkez (central) district, opposite Murat Paşa Mosque. According to the cultural inventory of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the hammam was built in the 17th century by Murat Pasha and his son Ali Pasha; the building has an inscription and an endowment deed. Registered as a monumental building, the hammam is maintained by the General Directorate of Foundations, and restoration work is carried out from time to time.
The hammam belongs to the group of halvetli hammams, in which halvet rooms (private alcoves) are arranged around a domed hot room. The building consists of a changing room, a warm room, a hot room, a water tank adjoining the hot room and a furnace; its external dimensions are about 17 x 23 metres. According to the inventory record, the building has undergone various repairs, and all parts except the changing room retain their original character.
Paşa Hamamı is still in use as a hammam today. An article in the local press describes how, under its current operator, the interior was clad in marble and the changing cubicles were renewed in wood, and notes that the hammam has professional kese (exfoliating scrub) attendants and a massage service. On its Google listing the business presents itself as a men's hammam; ask in advance whether there is a service for women.
The hammam opens every day at 07.30; closing time varies between 01.00 and 01.30 depending on the day. Being in the city centre, it is easy to reach for those exploring Niğde's historic centre.
