About

Tarihi Meydan Hamamı is on Şemsi Sivasi Caddesi in the Çarşıbaşı neighbourhood of Sivas's central district, opposite the Meydan Camii. According to Sivas Municipality's records, the hammam was commissioned by Hasan Pasha in 1564. About 300 metres from the historic city square, the building forms part of the old bazaar quarter together with the Meydan Camii, in whose courtyard stands the tomb of Şems-i Sivasi.
Built of cut stone, the hammam follows the classic Ottoman hammam plan. The square changing hall has an iwan-shaped entrance and an arched window decorated with colonnettes, and an octagonal pool at its centre. From here you pass into the towel-drying area and the warm room. The domed hot room has four iwans, with kurnas (marble basins) in the iwans and an octagonal navel stone (the heated marble platform) at the centre. Because the ground around it has built up over time, the building now lies 1.5–2 metres below street level.
Derelict in the 1980s, the hammam was later repaired, and rest and reading rooms were added to the building during this work. The hammam remains in service today and is within walking distance for those who want a traditional hammam experience while exploring the historic centre of Sivas.
The hammam is open every day from 06.30 to 23.00. As there is no official information on the arrangements for women and men or on services such as kese (exfoliating scrub), it is worth phoning before you go.
