Tarihi Tekke Hamamı
About
Tarihi Tekke Hamamı is on Tekke Hamamı Sokağı in the Hocaimat neighbourhood of Tosya, a district of Kastamonu, about 2 kilometres from the town centre. According to sources from Tosya Municipality, the hammam was built by Sheikh İsmail-i Rumi, a 17th-century Sufi mystic born in Tosya. The mosque the sheikh built still stands in the same neighbourhood today.
Built of rubble stone and mortar, the building is also known for the legends told about it. According to a legend compiled by the municipality, when the villagers would not give the sheikh their horses and oxen, he began building the hammam at night; the villagers, curious about the work, kept watch at night and saw deer carrying the materials on their backs. Inside the hammam there is a stone lion's head with water flowing from its mouth, and a section known as Şeyh Kurnası (the Sheikh's Basin).
Local sources state that the hammam is still used for bathing today. A meaningful stop for those interested in historic buildings and local stories, and for anyone looking for a traditional hammam in Tosya; it also suits a short visit when passing through Tosya.
According to Google, the hammam is open every day from 07.00 to 18.30. As the arrangements for women and men are not given in any official source, you need to phone the hammam before going and ask on which days and at what times it serves whom.
