Zile Şehir Hamamı
About
Zile Şehir Hamamı stands on Alparslan Türkeş Bulvarı in the Dutlupınar neighbourhood of Zile, a district of Tokat, at the foot of the hill crowned by Zile Kalesi (Zile Castle). Registered in the cultural heritage inventory as Taceddin İbrahim Paşa Hamamı, the building is called Pazaryeri Hamamı by Evliya Çelebi, while locally it has long been known as Belediye Hamamı (the Municipal Hammam).
According to the records of Zile Municipality and the Kültür Portalı (Culture Portal), the hammam was built by Taceddin İbrahim Paşa before AH 900 (AD 1494). Badly damaged in the 1939 earthquake, the building was reopened after repairs by Zile Municipality in 1947. In plan it is a double hammam: the southern section is reserved for men and the northern section for women, and in both the changing room, warm room, hot room and private cells (halvets) follow one another. Rubble-stone walls, brick domes and facades with dog-tooth brick eaves are the building's distinctive features.
Still serving its original purpose after more than five centuries, the hammam appeals to residents of Zile who want to experience traditional bathing culture in a historic setting and to visitors touring the district; it can be combined with a visit to the castle and the bazaar on the same day.
The hammam is open from Monday to Saturday from 06:00; it closes at 23:00 on weekdays and at midnight on Saturdays. For Sunday opening and the current days and hours of the women's section, you need to phone for information before you go.
