Bayburt Çarşı Hamamı
About
Bayburt Çarşı Hamamı stands in Kasaplar Çarşısı (the Butchers' Market) in the Kadızade neighbourhood of Bayburt's central district. Also known as Meydan Hamamı, the building belongs to the Kadı Mahmut Çelebi Foundation. Its exact construction date is unknown; it is dated to the first half of the 17th century because it is thought to be the Kızıl Hamam mentioned in Evliya Çelebi's Seyahatname (Book of Travels).
The part of the building that survives in its original form is the hot room. In this star-shaped section, six iwans open onto a domed central space; at the corners are halvet cells (small private hot rooms) with pointed barrel vaults, and the hot room is entered through the corner cell on the east side. Running east to west, the hammam now lies below street level; its other sections have lost their original character through repairs over the years.
After the Bent and Galer hammams closed in the 1990s, Çarşı Hamamı remained the only historic hammam still in use in Bayburt. According to local press reports from 2023, the hammam has been run by the Çalışkan family since 2017; the operators say they are waiting for the building to undergo a restoration faithful to the original.
The hammam is open every day from 05.00 until 00.30 at night. It is worth calling before you go for up-to-date information on the arrangements for women and men and on services such as kese (exfoliating scrub).
