Tarihi Şifa Hamamı
About
Tarihi Şifa Hamamı is on Necip Bey Caddesi in Saathane Meydanı (Clock Tower Square), in the Pazar neighbourhood of Samsun's İlkadım district. The building, owned by the General Directorate of Foundations, has no construction or repair inscription; inventory records date its construction to the 15th century. The hammam's name also appears in the 1813 endowment deed of Haznedarzade Süleyman Pasha, who commissioned the neighbouring mosque and madrasa.
The hammam lies south of the Süleyman Paşa Medresesi and the Medrese Camii, and west of Taşhan; archaeological remains from various periods were found around it during the redevelopment of the square. The restoration launched by the Samsun Regional Directorate of Foundations in 2017 was completed in 2021. In this work the domes were reinforced and the heating was converted from wood and coal to natural gas; the changing sections were renovated, while the bathing section was preserved in its original form.
The building still works as a hammam, its original function. The warming area at the entrance is followed by the hot room with its navel stone (the heated marble platform) and the halvets (small private hot rooms); after the restoration, one of the halvets was converted into a sauna. Kese (exfoliating scrub) and massage are also offered. It is a good stop for those looking for a traditional hammam experience in the city centre and for visitors exploring Samsun's historic centre.
The hammam is open every day from 06.00 to 23.00. As official sources do not say whether there is a section or day reserved for women, it is a good idea to phone before you go.
