Yes, couples can go to a Turkish bath together in Istanbul, but usually not in a traditional historic hammam. Most of Istanbul's historic hammams keep women and men apart, either in two separate sections or at separate times of day. Couples who want to bathe together can book Süleymaniye Hamamı, a 16th-century hammam that runs mixed hours for couples and families, or a hotel or day spa with a private hammam, a couples' suite or a couples' massage room.
How the traditional separation works in Istanbul's hammams
Istanbul's big historic hammams were built for men and women to bathe apart, and most still separate them in one of two ways.
Double hammams (çifte hamam) are two complete bathhouses under one roof, each with its own entrance, changing area and hot room. Çemberlitaş Hamamı, built in 1584, has separate sections for women and men, each served by attendants of the same gender, and is open every day from 06:00 to midnight. Cağaloğlu Hamamı and Ayasofya Hürrem Sultan Hamamı are double hammams too; at Cağaloğlu the women's entrance is round the corner on Hamam Sokağı.
Single-section hammams divide the day instead. Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamamı in Tophane admits women from 08:00 to 16:00 and men from 16:45 to 23:30, every day.
A couple can still visit a double hammam at the same time: you go in through different doors, have your scrub separately and meet again afterwards. Two friends of the same sex can simply share a section. For the women's sections and their hours in detail, see our guide to women-only hammams in Istanbul.
The options for couples who want to bathe together
Couples who want to share the experience in Istanbul have four realistic options:
- A mixed historic hammam. Süleymaniye Hamamı runs couples' and families' hours under its historic dome. It is the clearest choice if you want the marble and the domed hot room together.
- A private hammam or couples' suite. Several hotel spas have a hammam that is booked for you alone, or a treatment suite for two. It is the most private option, and the one to look at if you are two men or two women, because Süleymaniye only takes bookings that include at least one man and one woman.
- A couples' massage. A couples' massage puts two tables side by side in one room. Several of the spas below also have a hammam, so you can combine the two.
- Mixed hotel spa facilities. In hotel spas listed as mixed, men and women use the facilities together in swimwear, but not necessarily every space: Raffles, for example, has separate male and female relaxation areas. Ask which areas you can share.
For planning a whole day around it, see our guide to a spa day for couples.
Süleymaniye Hamamı: the historic hammam for couples and families
Süleymaniye Hamamı, Mimar Sinan's hammam in the Süleymaniye mosque complex in Fatih, welcomes men and women together. Its website sets out the rules clearly:
- Hours: couples and families every day from 10:00 to 21:00; men only from 06:00 to 10:00, except Sundays. The women-only slot is closed until 7 November 2026.
- Who can book: every booking must include at least one man and one woman; single travellers and single-gender groups are not taken in the couples' hours. The booking form asks for the number of men and women, an email address, a phone number and your hotel. It does not ask whether you are married.
- Shared, not private: the main dome is shared with other couples and families. Private use is not available.
- Treatments together: partners have their scrub and soap massage together, not in separate areas.
- Attendants: all the attendants (tellak) are men.
- Included: a private lockable changing room, peştemal, towels, slippers, drinks and hair dryers. Women are given a bikini, shorts and a peştemal, men are given shorts, and you may wear your own swimwear.
- Booking and payment: online only, ideally two or three days ahead. You pay a non-refundable deposit by card and the rest in cash (euros, dollars or lira) on arrival.
- Age: adults only; guests aged 16 and over are welcome with both parents.
The visit lasts about 105 minutes: 15 minutes to check in and change, 30 minutes warming on the central marble platform, 30 minutes of scrub, soap wash and foam massage, and 30 minutes for drinks and dressing in the cooling room. The price was 90 € per person in October 2026.

What to ask when you book
- Is it mixed at the time we want? Süleymaniye, for example, is men-only in the early morning.
- Private or shared? "Mixed" can mean a hot room shared with other couples, or a hammam booked for the two of you alone.
- Together or one after the other? Ask whether you are treated at the same time, in the same room.
- Who does the scrub? Ask whether you can choose a female or male therapist. At Süleymaniye all the attendants are men.
- What do we wear? Is swimwear provided, or should you bring your own?
- Per person or per couple? Check what is included, the deposit and the cancellation terms. Galatasaray refunds cancellations made at least 24 hours ahead; Süleymaniye's deposit is non-refundable.
- Any health rules? Galatasaray does not serve guests who are pregnant, menstruating or have a heart condition. Süleymaniye does not recommend its heat for pregnant guests or anyone with heart conditions, asthma or blood pressure problems. If either of you is pregnant or has a heart or blood pressure condition, check with a doctor first.
- Can non-residents book? Some hotel spas keep their facilities for hotel guests.
Etiquette for couples in a shared hammam
A mixed hammam is still a public bath, and the other guests are there to relax.
- Stay covered. Keep your peştemal or swimwear on the whole time; Galatasaray does not allow full nudity.
- Keep affection discreet. A shared hot room is not a private suite.
- Speak softly. Süleymaniye asks guests to keep their voices low, and Galatasaray asks guests to avoid loud noise.
- No photos in the hot room. Süleymaniye bans photos and videos in the washing and hot rooms. Leave your phones in the locker.
- Keep to your slot. Süleymaniye asks you to arrive 15 minutes early and to finish within your time.
- Pace yourselves. Pour cool water over yourself, step out when the heat gets too much and drink water afterwards.
- Tipping. Süleymaniye says tips are at your discretion and keeps a tip box at reception.
