The warmest way to spend a rainy day in Istanbul is somewhere hot and indoors: a historic hammam in Sultanahmet or Beyoğlu, a hotel spa with a pool and sauna, or a long massage. The rain is regular enough to plan around. Türkiye's state meteorological service (MGM) records 11 to 16 rainy days a month in Istanbul from November to March, against three or four in July and August.

Winter in the city is damp rather than freezing. Average highs run from about 10 °C in January and February to 16 °C in November, and December is the wettest month by volume, with 99 mm of rain on average (MGM, 1950–2025). Below are nine ideas for those days, each with the time to allow, the district and where to go.

Idea Time to allow District
Historic hammam 1–2 hours Fatih (Sultanahmet), Beyoğlu
Hotel spa day pass Half a day Beşiktaş, Beyoğlu (Taksim)
Long massage 50 minutes or more, plus rest Beşiktaş, Şişli (Nişantaşı)
Couples' spa afternoon 2–3 hours Beyoğlu (Taksim), Fatih
Hammam, sauna, steam and pool circuit 2–3 hours Şişli, Beşiktaş
Facial or body treatment 30–60 minutes Sarıyer
Women-only hammam 1–2 hours Beyoğlu (Tophane), Fatih
Bridal or group hammam 3–4 hours Beşiktaş, Üsküdar
Bursa's thermal baths A full day Bursa (Osmangazi)

1. A historic hammam in Sultanahmet or Beyoğlu

A historic hammam is the classic answer to a grey day: you swap the drizzle for a warm marble dome, a heated stone platform and a scrub with soap foam. Allow one to two hours. Ayasofya Hürrem Sultan Hamamı, Mimar Sinan's hammam between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, prices its rituals by length: in October 2026 the 45-minute Pir-ü Pak cost 110 € and the 110-minute Ab-ı Hayat 300 €. It has separate sections for women and men, and you need to book. In Beyoğlu, Galatasaray Hamamı, built in 1481, offers a kese service, a Pasha service and a classic oil massage in private rooms; book ahead and ask how men and women are arranged. Every package is compared in our Istanbul hammam prices guide.

2. A hotel spa day pass with pool and sauna

A hotel spa day pass gives you a pool, sauna and steam room for a few hours without booking a room, which suits a day when you want to do very little. Allow half a day. Raffles İstanbul Spa, in Zorlu Center in Beşiktaş, lists a daily Spa Access entry at 125 € on its spa menu (as we checked in October 2026). The spa covers 3,000 square metres with a pool, hammam, sauna and steam room; ask which areas the entry includes when you book. In Taksim, Aurel Spa at the Occidental Hotel welcomes outside visitors with a 180-minute day-use option, and has a pool, hammam, sauna and jacuzzi. Most Istanbul spas publish no day price at all; our day spa guide explains how to get in as a day visitor.

3. A long massage

A long massage is the slowest, warmest hour you can spend on a wet afternoon. On the Istanbul spa menus we checked, a full-body massage starts at 50 minutes; allow about two hours with changing and rest. Melas Spa & Wellness in Beşiktaş lists Swedish, Thai, Balinese, deep tissue and hot stone massage, and in October 2026 a 50-minute classic Swedish massage cost 2,600 TL. Book ahead; English is spoken and you do not need to be a hotel guest. In Nişantaşı (Şişli), Muse and Life Spa offers Balinese massage by Indonesian therapists, as well as hot stone and deep tissue, and it is close to the metro, which helps when it is pouring.

4. A couples' spa afternoon

A couples' spa afternoon means a hammam and massage side by side, which is hard to find in a historic hammam, as most separate women and men by section or by hours. Allow two to three hours. Ocean Spa at the InterContinental in Gümüşsuyu, Taksim, has a VIP hammam suite for couples and a couples' massage room, with massages by Balinese therapists. If you would rather be under a historic dome together, Süleymaniye Hamamı in Fatih admits men and women together. Its single ritual lasts about 105 minutes and in October 2026 cost 90 € per person, with the scrub, foam and refreshments included.

5. The hammam, sauna, steam and pool circuit

The hammam, sauna, steam and pool circuit is the spa version of a long lunch: you move between dry heat, steam and cool water at your own pace. Allow two to three hours. Aqua Plus Mecidiyeköy, in the Milord Hotel in Şişli, has a pool, hammam, sauna and steam room, can be used without staying at the hotel, and is a short walk from the metro and metrobus. Health Club & Spa Soul at the Conrad Istanbul Bosphorus in Beşiktaş combines a pool, hammam, sauna and steam room with private hammam rituals. Our guide to the right order for hammam, sauna, steam room and pool explains how long to stay in each. Heat is hard work for the body: if you are pregnant or have a heart condition or high or low blood pressure, check with your doctor first, and drink water between rounds.

6. A facial or body treatment

A facial or body treatment is a shorter way to get out of the rain and into a warm room. Allow 30 to 60 minutes. O'Spa by O'Wellness, in Skyland in Sarıyer, lists skin care alongside massage and a traditional hammam. In October 2026 its shortest sessions, among them a peeling and foam treatment, cost 3,500 TL, and a package of massage with peeling and foam cost 5,000 TL. According to its website, the sauna and steam room can be used before or after a treatment, there is a lounge with herbal tea, and the spa is open daily from 09:00 to 23:00. Raffles, from idea 2, also offers skin care.

7. A women-only hammam session

A women-only hammam session takes place in a section or a time slot reserved for women, which many first-timers find more relaxed. Allow one to two hours. Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamamı in Tophane, Beyoğlu, built by Mimar Sinan in 1580–1583, admits women every day from 08:00 to 16:00; the traditional ritual cost 4,700 TL in October 2026. Çemberlitaş Hamamı in Fatih is a double hammam with a separate women's section, open daily from 06:00 to midnight, so it also works for a wet evening. In October 2026 entry cost 3,200 TL and the scrub and foam package 4,050 TL. Our guide to women-only hammams in Istanbul lists the other women's sections.

8. A bridal or group hammam

A bridal or group hammam turns the bath into a celebration, following the Turkish custom of the bride bathing with female friends and relatives before the wedding. Today it is sold as a package for brides, hen parties and groups. Allow three to four hours. Explore Spa and Fitness, at Le Méridien in Etiler, Beşiktaş, offers a bridal hammam ritual by appointment, with a pool, hammam, sauna and steam room, and English is spoken; call ahead if you are not staying at the hotel. On the Asian side, Rituelle Spa at the Bosphorus A11 Hotel in Paşalimanı, Üsküdar, lists a bridal package and a Turkish hammam with Bosphorus views. Ask whether the price is per person or per group, and what food and music are included. Our bridal hammam guide explains the traditions.

9. A day trip to Bursa's thermal baths

A day trip to Bursa's thermal baths takes you across the Sea of Marmara to a city where the water in many historic baths comes hot from the spring. Plan a full day rather than half. BUDO sea buses leave Kabataş for Mudanya at 08:00 and sail back at 16:00 or 19:00 on weekdays (timetable for late October 2026). There is no shuttle from the pier, so you continue by city bus or taxi. In Çekirge (Osmangazi), Keçeli Tarihi Kadınlar Hamamı is a 14th-century hammam with thermal water, for women only. Yeni Kaplıca, a historic domed bath with a sulphurous thermal pool, has a men's section plus family cabins where couples can bathe together. In October 2026 its price list showed entry at 500 TL, kese 550 TL, foam massage 650 TL and a family cabin for two from 1,300 TL for 90 minutes. Our guide to Bursa's historic hammams and hot springs covers each bath. The same health advice applies: check with your doctor first if you are pregnant or have heart or blood pressure problems.
