Why are historic hammams more expensive?
Upkeep and restoration. Maintaining the dome, marble and heating system of a centuries-old building is expensive, and that cost is reflected in the price. Location and visitor profile. A large share of the customers at hammams in and around Sultanahmet are foreign visitors. That is why prices are given in euros. What the package includes. A "hammam" price sometimes covers entry only, sometimes kese and foam wash, and sometimes massage and refreshments as well. When comparing two hammams, compare like with like: is it entry only, are kese and foam wash included, how many minutes is the massage, are drinks and a peshtemal included in the price? Length. Some hammams, such as Hürrem Sultan, price their rituals by the minute. There is almost a threefold difference between the 45-minute ritual and the 110-minute one.
How to pay less for a hammam
- Choose entry only. If you can do the kese and foam wash yourself, entry at Çemberlitaş is 850 TL cheaper than the kese and foam wash package, and there is no time limit.
- Compare all-inclusive prices. The €90 at Süleymaniye covers kese, foam wash, soap massage, refreshments and the peshtemal; once you add up the items you would pay for separately, the difference may narrow.
- Check children's prices. At Kılıç Ali Paşa, ages 4-12 pay 3,000 TL and ages 0-3 go free.
- Ask about paying cash. Kılıç Ali Paşa gives a 5% discount for cash.
- Look at neighbourhood hammams. Local hammams outside the tourist area are usually cheaper. You can compare venues offering Turkish baths in Istanbul in our guide.
- Ask what is included. When booking, ask whether the towel, peshtemal, soap and tip are included in the price.
Before you go to the hammam
