A bridal hammam (gelin hamamı) is a tradition in which, before the wedding, the bride goes to the hammam with her female relatives, neighbours and friends to bathe together, eat, drink and celebrate. It was part of the wedding week both in Ottoman Istanbul and in Anatolia. Today many hammams sell it as a package. Among the Istanbul hammams that publish their prices on their own websites, as of 23 September 2026 a bridal hammam starts from 5,500 and 6,500 TL at Çemberlitaş Hamamı (Çemberlitaş Hammam), and from 15,000 TL in total for a group of 10 at Anadolu Olimpik Hamamı in Pendik.

What is a bridal hammam?

At a bridal hammam the bride bathes together with women from the family hosting the wedding and their circle, her hair and body are cared for, and then come food and festivities. In the past, invitations were carried from house to house by women known as "okuyucu" (inviters). The "okuntu", the token that served as the invitation, was sometimes a bar of soap for the wedding hammam. In Sivas, anyone who accepted the soap was considered to have accepted the invitation.

Families who could afford it hired one of the public market hammams outright; this was called "hamam kapatmak" (literally "closing the hammam"). Hosts who could not afford it paid their guests' entrance fees instead. In some parts of Anatolia this pre-wedding hammam is also called the "kına hamamı" (henna hammam).

How is a bridal hammam held?

The traditional steps

According to the Istanbul Water Museum's account of the Ottoman period and the information compiled by Çemberlitaş Hamamı, the day ran roughly like this:

  1. The bundles are prepared. A peshtemal, towels, wooden bath clogs, soap, a comb and clean underwear are packed into embroidered cloth bundles. The bride's bundle is more ornate than the others.
  2. The welcome. The bride arrives before her guests so that she can greet them. In the changing room, rose water, Turkish coffee, sherbet and nuts are served.
  3. Veil and clogs. The bride is dressed in a hammam robe and a red veil is placed over her head. She wears ornate clogs 25-30 cm high.
  4. Bathing. On the arm of the hammam matron and a bath attendant, while her friends sing traditional rhyming verses, the bride is led to the finest basin in the hammam. Meanwhile the bride's sherbet is handed out.
  5. Henna. Henna is applied to the hands of the bride and her friends. A gold lira coin is pressed onto the henna in the bride's right palm and bound with a silk handkerchief.
  6. Scattering coins. Wrapped in gold-embroidered towels, the bride returns to the changing room and kisses the hands of her elders. Shiny coins are scattered over her; unmarried girls try to catch them so that their own luck in marriage will open up.
  7. Celebration. Food brought from home is eaten, music is played and dancing girls perform. The gathering often went on until the evening call to prayer.

The bridal hammam had one more purpose: mothers looking for a bride for their son had the chance to get to know young women there.

In today's hammams

Hammam packages are a shortened version of this tradition. Ayasofya Hürrem Sultan Hamamı welcomes guests with sherbet and homemade Turkish delight, followed by kese (exfoliating scrub), foam wash and a clay mask, live music and dancing. On request, a henna ceremony is held with a throne and kaftans. At Çemberlitaş Hamamı there is first a two-hour celebration, and then everyone moves into the hammam. The packages at neighbourhood hammams in Pendik and Sancaktepe also include henna-night props such as a bindallı (embroidered velvet gown), tambourines, a tiara, henna candles and a bridal throne. We explain how a kese is done in what is kese and how is it done.

Customs that vary from region to region

  • Sivas. The pre-wedding hammam is called the "kına hamamı" (henna hammam). The "gelin hamamı" (bridal hammam), on the other hand, is the one held three days, a week or sometimes 15 days after the wedding. At the henna hammam the bride is seated on an upturned hammam cauldron and washed, and every guest pours a bowl of water over her head. Guests eat stuffed vine leaves, içli köfte (stuffed bulgur balls), su böreği (layered pastry), baklava and kalbura bastı (syrup-soaked biscuits); folk songs are sung to the darbuka, tambourine and finger cymbals, and the halay line dance is danced. The groom's side pays for the post-wedding bridal hammam; the bride first helps her mother-in-law to bathe and combs her hair.
  • Edirne. Romani brides used to enter the bridal hammam in tall clogs decorated with moving bird figures.
  • The groom, and after the wedding. In the classic wedding week, the groom also goes to the hammam with his friends on the day the bride is collected from her family home. In some regions, after the wedding an "on beş hamamı" (literally "fifteen hammam") is held for the bride and a "güvey hamamı" (groom's hammam) for the groom's circle.

When is a bridal hammam held?

Sources give different days, but all of them point to the wedding week. In the classic wedding week described by the TDV İslâm Ansiklopedisi (Encyclopaedia of Islam), the bride is taken to the hammam on Tuesday, the henna night is held on Wednesday and the bride is collected on Thursday. So the hammam comes two days before the bride is collected. The Istanbul Water Museum writes that in Ottoman Istanbul the bridal hammam was organised by the bride's family the day before the wedding. In Sivas the henna hammam takes place a few days before the wedding or during the day of the henna night.

According to Hürrem Sultan Hamamı, today the bridal hammam is mostly held between a week and a few days before the wedding; some brides choose the day before the wedding or the morning of the wedding itself. If you are putting it on the same day as the henna night, hold the hammam during the day.

How long does a bridal hammam last?

It used to take the whole day. Today it depends on the hammam and the package: at Çemberlitaş a two-hour celebration is followed by the hammam ritual, Anadolu Olimpik Hamamı's packages include 4 hours of celebration, and at Külliye Hamam in Sancaktepe the time allowed is 3.5 hours. When planning, set aside 3-4 hours.

Who comes to a bridal hammam?

Traditionally only women take part: the bride's mother, female relatives from both families, neighbours and the bride's friends.

Group size depends on the size of the hammam. Hürrem Sultan Hamamı says that small hammams can host 10-15 people and large ones 30-40. The packages are built around this: Anadolu Olimpik sells group packages for 10, 15 and 20 people. Külliye Hamam quotes its bridal hammam prices for groups of 15 or more, and requires at least 45 people to close the hammam entirely for you. At Külliye the hammam stays open to other customers during a bridal hammam; ask about this at the hammam you choose too.

Underwear, kese, peshtemal, shampoo, towels and a hairdryer are included in the event. The option with menu includes cocktail snacks, mixed crisps, a cold meze platter (kısır bulgur salad, carrot tarator, dolma, cake), potato salad, sigara böreği (fried pastry rolls) and soft drinks (water, tea, cola, Fanta, fizzy lemonade); Turkish coffee is extra. With the option without menu, you arrange the refreshments yourself.

Booking a bridal hammam

  1. Settle the date and the approximate number of guests. Hammams give availability on that basis. Anadolu Olimpik does not sell its bridal hammam package without an appointment.
  2. Ask for what is included in writing. Is the price per person or a group total? Are kese and foam wash, refreshments, music and henna supplies part of the package?
  3. Ask about the deposit and cancellation terms. Külliye Hamam does not accept a booking without a deposit covering 5 people, and does not refund the deposit if you cancel.
  4. Confirm the final number in good time. Çemberlitaş asks for the final number 2 days in advance.
  5. Find out the rule on outside food and drink. Some hammams let you bring your own food but sell drinks themselves; others prepare the menu themselves.

When you go to a bridal hammam

  • Towel and spare underwear. Some hammams provide towels and peshtemals; if yours does not, bring your own.
  • Swimsuit or bikini and a swimming cap. You may need these if the pool and jacuzzi will be used. At Külliye Hamam they are compulsory for the pool and jacuzzi; if you do not have them, you can buy them at the venue.
  • A separate peshtemal or dressing gown for the bride. Ask whether the package includes a bride's gown or a bindallı.
  • Jewellery. Leave valuable jewellery at home or put it in a locked locker.
  • Don't arrive hungry or very full. Cağaloğlu Hamamı does not recommend the hammam if you are.
  • Pregnant guests. Cağaloğlu Hamamı does not recommend the hammam to guests in the first or last three months of pregnancy, or to those with heart disease, diabetes or asthma. Consult a doctor before going into the hot room.
  • Cash. If you plan to tip, have coins or cash with you.

For your bag, see what to take to the hammam; for clothing, what to wear at a hammam and spa; and for pregnancy, massage and spa during pregnancy.
