Most hammams provide the basics, but what each one provides varies. This list is here so that you are prepared before you have to ask the venue "what should I bring?".

Usually provided by the venue

  • Peshtemal — handed out at the entrance
  • Towel — included at most venues
  • Slippers — disposable or the venue's own
  • Kese (exfoliating scrub mitt) — disposable, if it is included in the service
  • Soap and shampoo — in the shower area

Ask when you make your appointment which of these cost extra and which are included; it varies from venue to venue.

Bring your own

Swimsuit or underwear. Required at mixed venues. A practical tip: choose an old swimsuit — the heat and soap wear out the elastic over time.

A change of underwear. The thing people forget most. You will need a dry set when you leave.

Comb or brush.

Moisturiser. Your skin loses moisture after a kese; bringing your own product is best.

Hair tie or cap. For long hair.

Water. Most venues offer some, but have your own with you.

A plastic bag. For your wet swimsuit and underwear.

Don't bring

  • Valuable jewellery. Metal heats up, and there is a risk of losing it. Leave it at home.
  • Contact lenses. They are uncomfortable in steam; glasses are better.
  • Your phone. At most venues phones are not allowed in the wet area — both for the sake of the device and for privacy.

Extra notes for women

Waxing and shaving. Do it at least 24 hours before the hammam; kese irritates freshly shaved skin.

Make-up. It will come off anyway, so remove it before you go and take it with you for the way back.

Periods. Most venues have no rule on this; it is a matter of personal preference. If you are unsure, ask the venue.

Questions to ask before your appointment

  1. Are the peshtemal, towel and slippers included?
  2. Is the kese single-use?
  3. Is it mixed, are there separate sections, or are there women's and men's days?
  4. Are there lockers with locks?
  5. Is there a hairdryer?

If it is your first visit, how to use a hammam and how to tie a peshtemal are explained step by step.

If you haven't chosen where to go yet, you can list hammam and spa venues by location and how you plan to use them.
