Swedish massage and deep tissue massage sit side by side on spa menus, but they are two techniques that do different jobs. The difference lies in the pressure and in what they target.

The short answer

Swedish massage Deep tissue
Pressure Light to medium Firm
Target Surface muscles, circulation Deeper muscle layers, connective tissue
Pace Flowing, rhythmic Slow, focused on specific points
Afterwards Relaxed, rested Mild soreness possible for 1-2 days
Who it suits Relaxation, a first massage Chronic tension, knots

Swedish massage

It works with long, flowing strokes. The aim is not to push the muscles hard but to speed up circulation and relax them. It is the natural starting point for someone with no experience of massage: it is easy to follow what is being done, and it is not uncomfortable.

Aromatherapy and hot stone massages are mostly built on this technique — one adds essential oils, the other adds heat.

Deep tissue massage

It applies slow, deep pressure with the fingertips, elbows and forearms. It goes past the top layer of muscle to target the tight bands underneath. The tension that builds up in the neck and shoulders of people who spend long hours at a computer is a typical case.

Should it hurt? No. You should feel the pressure, but it should not make you hold your breath. Unbearable pressure does not relax the muscle; on the contrary, it makes it tighten — so it is right to say so.

Which should you choose?

  • Stress, sleep, general tiredness → Swedish massage
  • Chronic tension in a specific spot → deep tissue
  • Recovery after sport → sports massage (close to deep tissue but focused on particular areas)
  • A specific complaint, referred by a doctor → medical massage

If it is your first time

Starting with Swedish massage and increasing the pressure at the next session gives better results than going straight to deep tissue. That way you will already have seen how your body responds to massage.

You can find venues offering both techniques on the service pages: Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, sports massage, medical massage. For a comparison of all types, see our guide to massage types.
