Üsküdar Çinili Hamamı

Üsküdar Çinili Hamamı (Üsküdar Tiled Hammam) is on Çinili Hamam Sokağı, a street off Çavuşdere Caddesi in Üsküdar's Valide-i Atik neighbourhood. The hammam was built in 1640 by Kösem Sultan as part of the same complex as the nearby Çinili Camii (Tiled Mosque). The İznik-style tiles that gave it its name have not survived; today the building is most notable for its high domes and its large, airy hot room.
The hammam runs on the traditional system, heated by wood burned in the furnace; the heat is distributed to the sections through pipes running inside the floor and walls. There are two separate sections for women and men, each with its own phone line.
Services follow the simple pattern of a neighbourhood hammam: in addition to entry, kese (exfoliating scrub) and foam massage are available, and oil massage is also offered in the women's section. The venue also organises henna nights and bridal hammam gatherings. It appeals to those looking for a traditional bathing experience in a 17th-century building rather than a showy spa.
The hammam is open every day of the week; the men's section is open from 07.00 to 22.00 and the women's section from 08.00 to 19.30. Credit cards are not accepted, so payment is in cash. Anyone planning a henna night or bridal hammam would do well to call the women's section in advance about the date and number of guests.
