Maderotherapy massage is an intensive-pressure body massage done with wooden tools of various shapes. It takes its name from the Spanish word madera, meaning “wood”. It is mostly offered on the hips, thighs, abdomen and arms, as a treatment aimed at the appearance of cellulite and a feeling of firmer skin.
In a maderotherapy session the client lies face up, face down or on their side, depending on the area being worked; usually two or three areas are covered in one session. First, an oil or cream is applied to the area to help the tools glide. The therapist then works the area in a set direction with fast, repetitive movements, using wooden rollers with a ridged surface, shaping boards with rounded edges and wooden cups that create a suction effect. The movements generally travel towards the groin and armpits, where the lymph nodes are. The pressure is noticeably stronger than in massages done by hand; redness of the skin during and after the session is normal, and bruising may also occur in sensitive people.
A maderotherapy session usually lasts 45-60 minutes, depending on the number of areas worked. Because the effect of a single session is limited and temporary, venues usually recommend a series of 1-2 sessions a week. The interval between sessions should be planned with the therapist according to how your skin reacted to the previous session.
Maderotherapy may temporarily increase circulation in the treated area and leave a short-lived feeling of smoothness and firmness in the skin. The treatment does not melt fat tissue, does not make you lose weight and does not permanently remove cellulite; the slimming noticed after a session mostly comes from a temporary reduction of fluid in the tissue. Whether the effect lasts depends on regular sessions, an active lifestyle and a balanced diet. Be wary of programmes sold with promises of permanent slimming or results in a single session.
Maderotherapy is intended for healthy adults who are bothered by the appearance of cellulite or a feeling of heaviness in the legs and who do not mind intensive pressure. Asking for the pressure to be kept low in the first session lets you see how your skin reacts to the treatment. In the following cases it is not given, or a doctor's approval is needed first:
Maderotherapy differs from other cellulite treatments in the tools it uses and the intensity of its pressure:
| Treatment | Tools | Pressure | Key feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maderotherapy massage | Wooden rollers, boards and cups | Firm | Redness and bruising may occur |
| Anti-cellulite massage | Hands; vacuum cups at some venues | Medium-firm | Kneading by hand and fast stroking |
| Cellulite treatment | Massage, devices, wraps and products | Depends on the programme | A treatment programme planned as a series |
| Lymphatic drainage massage | Hands | Very light | Slow, rhythmic movements on the surface of the skin |
| Body mask | Mud, clay or seaweed, and a wrap | None | Temporarily softens the skin |
When making an appointment for maderotherapy, asking the following makes it easier to make a realistic plan:
It can, but only under certain conditions. The abdomen is not worked straight after a meal, and the treatment is not given there if there is a hernia, an unhealed surgical scar or a pregnancy. As the abdomen is more sensitive than the hips and thighs, the pressure is usually kept lower.
You need your doctor's approval before starting maderotherapy after giving birth. In particular, the abdomen is not treated until a caesarean wound has fully healed. If you had a problem such as thrombosis or varicose veins during pregnancy or childbirth, tell both your doctor and the therapist.
The wooden sets sold for maderotherapy can be used at home, but the wrong direction and excessive pressure can cause bruising and strain on the veins. If you have varicose veins or a history of thrombosis, or take blood thinners, you should not use them at home either. If you plan to use them at home, it is safer to learn from a therapist who knows the tools how to work with light pressure.
Mild bruising can occur because of intense pressure and usually clears up on its own within a few days. Postpone the next session until the bruise has faded and ask the therapist to reduce the pressure. If you bruise very easily or over large areas, see a doctor to check for a bleeding tendency.
Yes, the treatment is not gender-specific and can also be done on men, on areas such as the abdomen or waist. Because the appearance of cellulite is more common in women, menus mostly present it as aimed at women. When making your appointment, ask whether the venue accepts male clients and whether you can choose your therapist.
