Hot candle massage is a body massage done with the warm oil produced by lighting and melting a massage candle made for use on the skin. These candles are made from plant-based ingredients that melt at a low temperature, such as soy wax, shea butter, cocoa butter or almond oil; the melted part is warm when poured onto the skin and is used as massage oil. The technique is mostly based on Swedish massage strokes; the difference is that the candle is the source of both the heat and the oil.
In a hot candle massage, the therapist lights the candle before the session and waits for enough oil to collect. They then put out the candle, test the temperature of the melted oil first on their own hand or the inside of their wrist, and pour a small amount onto the back, legs and arms, or take it into their palm and spread it over the skin. The session usually starts face down on the massage table and continues lying on your back.
The massage itself consists of long gliding strokes, kneading and circular movements; the pressure is mostly light to medium and is adjusted on request. The slipperiness of the warm oil makes the movements flow. If the candle is scented, a light fragrance can be noticed throughout the room; an unscented option can also be requested. At the end of the session, any excess oil left on the skin is removed with a towel.
Hot candle massage sessions mostly last 45-60 minutes; for full-body treatments the time can go up to 60-90 minutes. Shorter sessions usually focus on the back, neck and shoulders. As it is a treatment for relaxation, there is no set course; people who have massages regularly may choose it, like other classic massages, once every two to four weeks.
Hot candle massage is a suitable choice for those who want a massage with light to medium pressure and a feeling of warmth, those bothered by their skin feeling dry and tight, and those having a massage for the first time. The heat may help reduce muscle tension and help you relax; the plant oils leave the skin feeling softer for a while afterwards.
Do not have it, or consult your doctor first, in the following cases:
Hot candle massage is most often confused with hot stone and aromatherapy massage. In hot stone massage the heat comes from heated basalt stones placed on the body; the warmth feels more intense and lasts longer, and the weight of the stones adds to the effect. In candle massage the heat comes only from the warm oil, which soon approaches body temperature, so it gives a milder feeling of warmth. In aromatherapy massage, on the other hand, the defining element is the scent of essential oils; the oil does not have to be heated. A scented massage candle partly brings these two approaches together.
The price depends on the length of the session, the type of candle used and whether use of the facilities is included; for a general picture, see what determines massage and spa prices.
Not when a massage candle made for the skin is used; these candles melt at a low temperature and the melted oil feels warm. The therapist tests the temperature on their own hand before pouring the oil. If it feels too hot, say so straight away; this massage is not recommended for conditions that reduce the sensation of temperature, such as neuropathy.
A massage candle is made for use on the skin from plant oils and waxes that melt at a low temperature; once melted, it is used as massage oil. Decorative household candles are not made for the skin, their melted wax is not suitable for pouring onto the skin, and the fragrances and dyes they contain can irritate it. If you want to try it at home, use only a product made for massage.
First you need to find out what the candle contains. Massage candles often use plant oils such as almond oil, shea butter or coconut oil, and these can cause a reaction with some allergies. Ask for the list of ingredients when booking; if this cannot be confirmed, choose a massage with another oil whose ingredients are known.
Most of the oil is worked into the skin during the massage, and the excess is removed with a towel at the end of the session. Even so, your skin may feel oily for a while, and it may leave marks on light-coloured or delicate clothing. If you like, you can take a warm shower to remove the remaining oil.
It may help the skin feel softer and more moisturised for a while; the plant oils in the candle are worked into the skin during the massage. The effect does not last and is no substitute for regular moisturising. If the dryness is caused by eczema or another skin condition, consult your dermatologist first.
