What is Historic Hammam?

A historic hammam is a hammam built centuries ago that is still used for bathing today, with original architectural features such as its dome, navel stone and marble basins (kurnas) preserved. What defines a historic hammam is the building itself rather than the service: the traditional ritual is performed in a space built precisely for that ritual. The historic hammam is the branch of the hammam types that stands out for its architecture.

Layout and services in historic hammams

Most historic hammams consist of three main sections: the camekân, the hall where you undress and rest; the cooling room (or warm room), where you get used to the heat; and the hot room, with the navel stone in the middle and basins along the foot of the walls. Small glass openings in the dome of the hot room, known as filgözü, let in daylight. Almost all the historic hammams on the list offer kese (exfoliating scrub) and foam massage; both treatments are done on the navel stone by a male or female bath attendant. Extra services such as a sauna, thermal pool, body mask or bridal package are found at only a few venues. Some historic hammams in Istanbul combine kese, foam massage and refreshments into a single ritual package of set length.

Who a historic hammam appeals to

A historic hammam appeals to those who want to experience bathing together with the architecture, to local and foreign visitors who want to add a traditional hammam to a city trip, and to those who want a kese done the traditional way, on hot marble. Historic hammams are also where communal traditions such as the bridal hammam take place. If you are looking for a pool, a fitness room or a wide massage menu, a historic hammam may not meet your expectations; most of these buildings build their service around the hammam ritual.

What sets a historic hammam apart from hotel and modern hammams

The main difference between a historic hammam and a hotel hammam is scale and the way it is used. The hot room of a historic hammam is often under a large dome and is used by many people at the same time; a hotel hammam, by contrast, is usually a smaller room within the spa section, next to the sauna and steam room. Modern hammams offer the same ritual in newly built facilities of contemporary design. At a historic hammam, the price is mostly determined by whether you pay for entry alone or with kese and foam massage, the length of the ritual and the products used.

Arrangements for women and men, and notes before you visit

In historic hammams, how women and men use the baths depends on the layout of the building. Buildings constructed as a double hammam have two sections with separate entrances for women and men; in single-section hammams, different hours are set aside for women and for men. The list includes historic hammams that serve women only as well as ones that offer mixed use; ask the venue about hours and sections before you go.

  • A peshtemal and wooden bath clogs are usually provided at the hammam; if you would like to use your own kese mitt or shampoo, ask whether this is possible.
  • Hammams in tourist areas can get busy at certain times of day; booking an appointment for ritual packages cuts down on waiting.
  • If you have high blood pressure or a cardiovascular condition, or are pregnant, consult your doctor before spending a long time in the hot room.

Cities with historic hammams

Half of the historic hammams on the list are in Istanbul; most of them are in Fatih, on the historic peninsula, and the others in Beyoğlu. Several of these hammams are buildings attributed to Mimar Sinan; you can read about their architectural history in the guide to Istanbul's historic hammams. The historic hammams in Bursa, known for its hot spring tradition, are fed by thermal water; the historic hammam in Odunpazarı, Eskişehir also offers a thermal pool. Seyhan in Adana, Amasya and Kahramanmaraş each have one historic hammam on the list as well.
