The recommended order is based on rating and number of reviews, and on how complete and up to date a listing is. A paid membership does not change the order.
A spa package (spa day, spa ritual) is a set of several services offered in a set order as a single programme. A typical package is put together from these components: use of a hammam or sauna, kese (exfoliating scrub) and foam wash, a type of massage, a facial or body scrub, and refreshments in the relaxation area. The content and naming vary by venue; two packages with the same name may consist of different services.
A spa package follows a sequence that moves from warming up to treatments. In a well-designed programme the steps are usually as follows:
The first advantage of a spa package is price: it is usually priced lower than the total of the same services booked separately. The second is the order: because the muscles are warm after the hammam and sauna, massage is more comfortable; after kese the skin absorbs care products better. A well-designed package respects this order. The third is ease of planning; the venue arranges the transitions and there is no need to book a separate appointment for each service.
Spa packages last between 2 and 4 hours. When planning your appointment, look at the whole programme, not just the length of the massage; transitions, showers and rest time in between add noticeably to the total. Setting aside time to spend in the relaxation area, rather than heading off straight after the massage, lets you finish the programme without rushing. Spas are busier at weekends and on holidays, so for longer packages choosing a weekday can mean quieter shared areas.
A spa package suits people going to a spa for the first time who want to try different services in one go, those who want to set aside half a day for an occasion such as a birthday or anniversary, and couples. For the parts of the package that involve heat (hammam, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi), a doctor's approval is needed in cases of cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, diabetes and pregnancy. These parts are not recommended during pregnancy; for a pregnant guest, the massage part of the package should be arranged as a pregnancy massage. If you have a feverish illness, an open wound or recent surgery, it is best to postpone the package. Do not arrive for the package after drinking alcohol or start it on an empty stomach, and drink plenty of water throughout the programme.
A spa package is often confused with two services of similar scope:
| Programme | Content | Suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Spa package | Warm-up part, kese and foam wash, massage and treatments; 2-4 hours | One person or a couple setting aside half a day |
| Bridal package | Celebration elements added to a hammam ritual and treatments; as a group | The bride and those close to her before the wedding |
| Couples' massage | Simultaneous massage with two therapists in the same room; a warm-up part is not always included | Two people who want a shorter, massage-focused programme |
Some venues offer their packages for couples under their own names; to understand what these programmes include, you need to ask separately which services and durations are included.
A large share of the venues on the site offering spa packages are city hotel spas and day spas in Istanbul and Ankara. Resort and thermal hotel spas on the Antalya and Aydın coasts, a historic hammam in Istanbul and a hammam in Side also offer package programmes; at hammams, packages are built mainly around the hammam ritual and massage. The main factors that determine the price of a spa package are the number and length of the services in it, the type and length of the massage, whether hammam and sauna use is timed or unlimited, whether the package is booked as a couple or in a private suite, and weekend and seasonal differences.
When booking a spa package, it helps to clarify the following:
Packages usually last 2-4 hours. When planning your appointment, look at the whole programme rather than just the length of the massage; moving between treatments, showering and resting add noticeably to the total.
Usually, yes; packages are priced lower than the individual treatments added together. A well-designed package also takes the order into account: after the hammam and sauna the muscles are warm, so the massage is more effective, and after a kese (exfoliating scrub) the skin absorbs care products better.
Before your appointment, ask: which treatments are in the package and how long each one lasts; whether use of the hammam and sauna is time-limited or unlimited; whether a towel, peshtemal, slippers and robe are included; whether there are lockers and showers; and what the cancellation terms are. These details vary considerably from venue to venue.
At most venues, yes; a couples' spa package is the most frequently requested arrangement. In that case the massage is given at the same time, in the same room, by two therapists. When making your appointment, ask about a private room or suite, and whether the two of you can choose different treatments.
You are expected to bring a swimsuit or bikini. Ask in advance whether a towel, peshtemal, slippers and robe are included. If you have long hair, a hair tie is useful, as are your personal care products and, if you have them, your own slippers. Leave your jewellery at home.
The hammam, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi parts of a package are not recommended during pregnancy. However, if the massage part is arranged as a pregnancy massage, a suitable programme can be put together with your doctor's approval. Mention how many weeks pregnant you are when making your appointment, and ask whether the venue can make this arrangement.
Many hotel spas and day spas also offer spa packages to guests who are not staying; however, this varies from venue to venue. At some hotels, outside guests are accepted only at certain times, or priority is given to hotel guests at busy times. Ask separately whether use of the pool, sauna and hammam is included in the package.
Many spas also sell their packages as gift vouchers or gift cards. Find out in advance the voucher's validity period, the booking conditions, whether weekend use is restricted and whether it can be transferred to someone else. If the person you are giving it to has a condition such as pregnancy or blood pressure problems, also ask whether the package contents can be changed.
