The recommended order is based on rating and number of reviews, and on how complete and up to date a listing is. A paid membership does not change the order.
Swedish massage — often listed on menus as "classic massage" — is the most widely available type of massage in Istanbul. The venues in this guide are spread across both sides of the city, including Bahçelievler, Fatih, Zeytinburnu, Başakşehir, Şişli, Küçükçekmece, Pendik and Ataşehir.
Why it is the most common: Its gentle-to-medium pressure makes it suitable for the widest range of people, and a safe starting point for anyone trying massage for the first time. This popularity also means a wide price range — you will find it in every segment, from neighbourhood spas to hotel spas.
Watch out for different names: Some venues list the same treatment as "classic massage", "relax massage" or "Swedish massage". Whichever you see on the menu, state your preferred length and pressure when you make your appointment; that is the clearest way to tell them apart.
Choosing the length: 50-60 minutes covers the whole body. 30-minute sessions usually focus on the back, neck and shoulders, and are a popular choice in Istanbul for tension from desk work.
For details of the technique and health warnings, see our Swedish massage page.
