Spa and hammam options in Fatih consist of historic hammams on Istanbul's historic peninsula: all four venues listed on this page are historic hammams, and all of them offer the classic Turkish bath ritual. There are no hotel spas, day spas or massage centres on the list; in Fatih, the choice comes down to a hammam's location, its ritual menu and its arrangement for women and men.
Fatih's historic hammams are around Hagia Sophia, Çemberlitaş, Cağaloğlu and Süleymaniye, on the peninsula's sightseeing routes. Ayasofya Hürrem Sultan Hamamı and Süleymaniye Hamamı are works of Mimar Sinan; Süleymaniye Hamamı is part of the complex from which it takes its name. Çemberlitaş Hamamı is a double hammam (separate women's and men's sections) attributed to Mimar Sinan. Cağaloğlu Hamamı, built in the reign of Mahmud I, is a double hammam within walking distance of Hagia Sophia. The architecture and history of these buildings are covered in detail in the guide to Istanbul's historic hammams.
The core service at Fatih's hammams is the Turkish bath ritual: sweating on the navel stone, kese (exfoliating scrub) and foam massage. At the Süleymaniye, Çemberlitaş and Cağaloğlu hammams, kese and foam massage are also listed as separate services; at Süleymaniye Hamamı, kese, foam and refreshments are included in the ritual price. Ayasofya Hürrem Sultan Hamamı offers a broader menu, with traditional rituals called Pir-ü Pak and Ab-ı Hayat as well as massages with Judas tree extract, body masks and spa packages. The price varies with the scope of the ritual, whether kese and foam are included, and any massage or treatment added. The reasons for price differences between hammams are explained in the guide to Istanbul hammam prices.
The arrangement for women and men differs from one Fatih hammam to another. The Çemberlitaş, Cağaloğlu and Ayasofya Hürrem Sultan hammams have separate women's and men's sections; at Cağaloğlu Hamamı, the women's section is entered from Hamam Sokağı. Süleymaniye Hamamı operates on a mixed basis; it is worth asking how this works when you book. The historic peninsula draws large numbers of visitors, so booking ahead, especially at weekends and in the summer months, and finding out how long the ritual lasts and whether a peshtemal and slippers are provided will make your visit easier. For hammams and spas in Istanbul's other districts, see the Istanbul page.
Compare the 11 venues on this page by services and price level. Where a venue lists its arrangement, check whether it is women only, men only, mixed or has separate hours. For venues with opening hours, the cards show whether they are open right now. Confirm what's included, how long it takes and the current price with the venue before you book.
